Washington (BWA)--Christians in South Korea have condemned the November 23 shelling of the island of Yeonpyeong by North Korea that killed at least four South Koreans, two of them civilians.
"The major Christian organizations released statements condemning North Korea's cruel bloodshed that caused a national crisis," wrote former Baptist World Alliance (BWA) President Billy Kim. "Nationwide, prayer meetings are being held for the peace of the Korean Peninsula."
Christians are helping those who were affected by the missile attack, providing food, water and shelter, Kim said. "Korean churches and Christian organizations are actively involved in providing humanitarian relief."
Kim, who was BWA president from 2000-2005, stated that church offerings are being collected to assist in repairing the Marine Chapel that was damaged during the attack. The Suwon Central Baptist Church pledged US$20,000 toward the repairs.
"I will appreciate continued prayers for peace over the Korean peninsula," the former Baptist world leader stated.
